Saw Shackleton yesterday. Shackleton told him that Gregory said to him that they must "fight for science" and apparently the silly fellow has been trying to follow this sapient advice. He had seen Murray and was to see Scott with Murray today. He told Shackleton that Scott had been warned of the importance of the physical work but that they could not interfere with his discretion as to who should go, and that Rucker thought it possible a substitute could be [found]. Rucker added that Shackleton must make out the best case for himself with Scott that he could, but that if he did not go, Rucker strongly recommended him not to make a scene. To be left behind on account of his teeth would do him no harm; to be left for other reasons would put a black mark against him which he had better not make public. He seemed quite amenable and Rucker's impression that he has not been wisely handled was increased. |
