Title | Copy letter from Francis Mowatt, Treasury Chambers, to the President of the Royal Society [Sir William Huggins] and the President of the Royal Geographical Society [Sir Clements Markham] |
Creator | Mowatt, Sir; Francis (1837-1919); civil servant |
Recipient | Huggins; Sir; William (1824-1910); British astronomer |
Date | 20 June 1903 |
Description | The Lords Commissioners of the Treasury have considered the application for a grant to fund a relief vessel for the Antarctic Expedition. Considering the difficulty the Societies find themsleves in, and in order to ensure the safety of the Royal Navy Officers and men on the expedition, the Government offers to take over responsibility for the relief expedition, on the condition that the relief ship, the 'Morning', currently in New Zealand, is handed over at once to the Board of the Admiralty. This offer does not reflect on the financial conduct for the original Expedition, and the Finance Committee should continue to administer the remaining funds for the 'Discovery'. |
