Creator | MacGregor; Sir Evan (1842-1926); British civil servant |
Recipient | Huggins; Sir; William (1824-1910); British astronomer |
Date | 8 July 1903 |
Description | The Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty agree with the Joint Antarctic Committee that the 'Discovery' return to England, should return to England if she gets free of the ice. She would return via the South Pacific and Cape Horn, and will collect whatever additional observations are possible without risking the ship. The Lords are not prepared to consent to further exploration of the ice, even if more funds are forthcoming. Directions will be sent to Captain [Robert Falcon] Scott that if the 'Discovery' cannot be freed from the ice in time, the ship will be abandoned and the crew will return home. |
