Title | Letter from [Joseph] Larmor, Helen's Bay, Belfast, to the President [Sir William Huggins] |
Creator | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish physicist |
Recipient | Huggins; Sir; William (1824-1910); British astronomer |
Date | 17 September 1903 |
Description | Has received [Sir Clements] Markham's draft letter to Captain [Robert Falcon] Scott. Larmor assumes Huggins has already decided not to accept it, and Larmor enclosed a copy with his objections marked. Trusts Huggins will adhere to his prior draft which this communication ignores. Discusses the difficulty of reviewing or praising the scientific work of the expedition in detail before the records and collections have been received and considered by experts. As the expedition is coming home a general letter of congratulation is enough. May prefer to await Markham's return to consider the joint letter drafted on 5 September. 'One constantly hears gloomy forebodings as to the scientific work of the expedition, which would be intensified by an official letter praising it up on no information whatever'. |
