2. A report from delegates who attended the Cartell of German Academies in May was read. The Cartell expressed their appreciation for the offer of cooperation.
3. Read the letter of 9 June 1898 from the Marquis of Salisbury [Robert Arthur Talbot Gascoyne-Cecil] to the Royal Geographical Society. States that the Government cannot embark upon an Antarctic expedition of this magnitude in the current circumstances. He has made enquiries with the Secretary of State for the Colonies, who informed him that the Colonies resolved to take no joint action on this matter as a recent Conference of Premiers held in Melbourne in March.
4. Sir Clements Markham reported on the German Government 's readiness to cooperate with an English Expedition in dividing the work of exploration. A recommendation will be made to Council to make an application for a Government Grant of £1,000 for the purpose of an Antarctic Expedition, and to make an application to the British Association for another £1,000 grant for the same purpose. |
