DescriptionFamily transcription of Sir John Herschel's original diary. The volume describes events, including John Herschel's astronomical work at Feldhausen Observatory, South Africa, interspersed with observations on botany, geology, natural history, and on his personal and social life at the Cape. Occasional marginal drawings are copies of the originals. Key visitors to the Herschels include Charles Darwin and Robert Fitzroy on 15 June. The volume ends with summary observations of Cape plants. Some annotations, corrections and comments from the time of the transcription.

With a cover sheet 'Diary 1836' and the note: 'Halley's Comet last mention May 11'.
