Title | Letter from R [Robert Falcon] Scott, British Antarctic Expedition 1910, 36 & 38 Victoria Street, London, to Sir Archibald Geikie, President of the Royal Society |
Creator | Scott; Robert Falcon (1868-1912); Royal Navy officer; Antarctic explorer |
Recipient | Geikie; Sir; Archibald (1835-1924) |
Date | 21 March 1910 |
Description | Scott confirms that he had prepared further notes concerning Dr [William Napier] Shaw's letter dated 10 November 1908. However, as these additional notes related to content in Shaw's letter that did not relate to the preface of the Meteorological Volume, Scott has decided further discussion of these issues would not be helpful. His case against errors in the prefact 'should be judged on the correspondence as it stands and especially as set forth in my letters of October 10th and November 23rd 1908'.
Scott believes everyone has acted in good faith and regrets any strong language he previously used. He still believes the errors should be corrected in the preface of volume II. Scott points out that the criticism over the lack of data concerning the altitude of the Great Barrier was particularly unfair, as 'We are about to visit the Great Barrier again and no suggestion has been made as to how the deficiency can be supplied'. Also thanks Geikie for all his support with the new Antarctic Expedition. |
