Title | Letter from R [Robert Falcon] Scott, British Antarctic Expedition 1910, 36 & 38 Victoria Street, London, to Archibald Geikie, President of the Royal Society |
Creator | Scott; Robert Falcon (1868-1912); Royal Navy officer; Antarctic explorer |
Recipient | Geikie; Sir; Archibald (1835-1924) |
Date | 3 June 1910 |
Description | Scott gives feedback on the draft preface for the second volume of the Meteorological Results from the 'Discovery' Expedition, which Geikie has sent him. His only issue concerns the discussion of levelling operations on polar expeditions. He points out a number of difficulties, including the weight of the equipment and the difficulty of making accurate readings, particularly 'inconstant and indeterminable refraction'. Scott would be eager to solve this problem, but no solution has been found in time for his new expedition. Provides an alternative draft for the final paragraph of the draft to clarify this point.
With a handwritten postscript note from Scott, stating he will try to find time to adjust the incorrect tables before he departs for the Antarctic. |
