Description | Noting Larmor's previous assistance in working out the rate of diffusion with combinations of tubes and absorbent discs. One set of conditions has assumed importance and he asks for more aid. He sets out a problem relating to thae rate of aborption of a perfectly absorbent disc with a lesser diameter at the bottom of a cylinder, when the density of carbon dioxide at the mouth of the cylinder is known. He discusses the problem and the points upon which he is not clear, quoting from his Philosophical Transactions paper. He cannot disentangle velocity of drift and density and he thinks the electrostatic analogy is useful, but insufficient. Brown wants to give a mechanical explanation, but has got himself into 'a hopeless tangle'. He has read with interest Larmor's paper in the Proceedings on the ascent of water in plants and he feels that Larmor has done the botanists a good turn. He discusses this, ands he has thought that the power might be accounted for by natural transpiration from leaves only. |
