Title | Letter from J [John] Brown, Belair, Windsor Avenue, Belfast, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Brown; John (1850-1911); British manufacturer |
Date | 9 February 1892 |
Description | St. John's seems to have been suffering from disease and he hopes that Larmor has escaped. His family has had an attack of illness, but Brown has been spared. He tried Larmor's suggestion and has found a cell which dies not short circuit or send a reverse current. He told Larmor that by increasing the heats of combination taken for various metals by a certain amount, he gets a proportionate heat equivalent for the cells. This appears to mean that the heats of combination increase with temperature by these amounts, supposing it to be justified on the asumption that all the chemical energy is converted to current. He gives an example of a fall with increase in temperature, noting a possible explanation, but asks Larmor if he can think of any hint. He has been puzzling over Helmholtz and others. He thanks Larmor for the paper on flaws and asks if he would join the new Engineering Section of the Belfast Philosophical Society, saying that Fitzgerald is one of its backers. |
