Title | Letter from H E [Henry Edward] Armstrong, 55 Granville Park, Lewisham, London, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Armstrong; Henry Edward (1848-1937); British chemist and educational reformer |
Date | 22 February 1907 |
Description | Larmor told him on Monday that the Bakerian Lecture was not fixed. He urges Larmor to ask Pope to give it, on valency. The principles were laid down by Frankland in his Royal Society paper and there has been no further development down to the present time. He outlines the work of Pope and Barlow, including some striking results. Pope has also made a most important laboratory discovery bearing on the valency of the metals. He urges that the Royal Society 'should for once show that it can appreciate serious work in the chemical field'. Pope is coming tomorow and Armstrong would like to secure the refusal of his work for the Society and the decision must be taken without delay.
In a postscript, Armstrong writes that he is glad that the Catalogue is beginning to be printed. If they are not careful, they will lose Mond's further support. |
