| Description | Thanking Larmor for his letter and saying that he intended to read the report in Engineering before replying, but has not had the chance. He does not understand what Larmor means by 'general background of absorption'. He discusses relationships between increases in frequency of exciting radiation, absorption and fluorescence. He has 'for some time been suspecting the necessity for a certain range of frequencies in the primary in order to excite some unknown higher frequency radiations. They have been strangely elusive!' He has begun to get evidence after a period of failure, but there is little proof that a certain range is the determining factor. He thought it the most probable reason for phenomena which appeared beyond control. Regarding the 'general background' the only other absorption he knows is associated with lower frequency fluorescent radiations. He concludes by asking if Larmor would give his opinion on possible candidates for the Chair of Natural Philosophy, noting Darwin, Chapman and Fowler. He presumes that Jeans would not accept. |
