TitleLetter from W N [William Napier] Shaw, 10 Moreton Gardens, Old Brompton Road, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorShaw; Sir William Napier (1854-1945); British meteorologist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date7 February 1905
DescriptionHe accepts the reprobation stating 'there is a horrible fascination about these curious coincidences'. He took the two year averages which smoothed the curve remarkably. He discusses these curves and admit to the criticism of his method, asking if Larmor has a mathematician 'who would give us some handy information about the superposition of harmonic curves of incommensurable period?' Shaw is almost happy about the yield of wheat curve, noting its periodicity, but thinking that it would be necessary to gather statistics for 133 years from now. He thanks Larmor for his letter and states that he has given [Robert] Harrison a page for Proceedings [of the Royal Society] and has left a curve for Larmor to see.
