| Title | Letter from W N [William Napier] Shaw, 10 Moreton Gardens, Old Brompton Road, to [Joseph] Larmor |
| Creator | Shaw; Sir William Napier (1854-1945); British meteorologist |
| Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
| Date | 1 July 1906 |
| Description | Shaw has written to Hudson to relay Larmor's opinion. He thinks that they do not know enough about the kinematics of cyclonic depressions to justify not regarding them as hydrodynamical problems. He gives reasons why he believes that previous efforts have failed, thinking that a real kinematic represntation of what happens within a depression would help understanding. Hudson's paper attempts to tell what kinematic hypotheses involve in the matter of conveyance, and Shaw thinks it a shame that he might not be encouraged to continue. Shaw concedes that Larmor knows mathematicians, and it is no use if the paper has no chance of passing. Shaw has encouraged Hudson, and thinks that the paper is in such a purely mathematical form that it would not appeal to practical applications. |
