TitleLetter from W N [William Napier] Shaw, 10 Moreton Gardens, Old Brompton Road, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorShaw; Sir William Napier (1854-1945); British meteorologist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date5 May 1909
DescriptionShaw does not think that the idea of the wind-rose recorder is not new. A simple wind direction recorder is needed and they have spent some time in the office designing one. It must record time with nicety, and one problem is that the vane suffers from friction and momentum. Shaw is tired of new inventions of winding wind instruments. The passion for supposing that the meteorological world is waiting for better instruments is distressing and he will ot stretch a point for a new anemometer. As an exhibit, it is not easy to judge without seeing it, but he thinks that the 1850s were the proper years for exhibiting such designs at the Royal Society's soiree.
