TitleLetter from Frederick Soddy, the University, Glasgow, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorSoddy; Frederick (1877-1956); British chemist and social commentator
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date8 October 1907
DescriptionHe gives thanks to Larmor for communicating their paper and he hopes to be up for the meeting. Soddy was surprised to obtain fluorescence 13cms from the cathode in helium at .7mm., but in looking up [Philipp] Lenard's figures for his rays, he found that his own penetration power was not greater than Lenard's rays of high velocity. Helium seems difficult to ionise, and he notes reasons for fluorescence at high pressures, concluding that Lenard's and their results agree. However the relative difficulty of helium ionisation has not been observed before, since it has been supposed to follow the usual law of ionisation, perhaps because impure helium has been used. The characteristics of the dischsrge depend upon the kind of tube used and some results just obtained make him doubt the accuracy of [Alan Archibald] Campbell Swinton's conclusion about helium being driven into glass.
