TitleLetter from G [George] Johnstone Stoney, 8 Upper Hornsey Rise, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorStoney; George Johnstone (1826-1911); Irish physicist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date22 June 1897
DescriptionHe thanks Larmor for the reference to [James] McCullagh's footnote on wave motion. Stoney has received the proof of a letter he wrote for the Philosophical Magazine, and he has added a line or two. He thinks he told Larmor that he was trying this method of investigating wave motion. He will finish it before hunting up the reference and he can then make any alteration or correction that MacCullagh's work may demand. He is astonished at how the teachings of such a man have dropped from view at his own university. [George Johnston] Allman was too much of a mathematician to give an adequate account of MacCullagh's physical work. He must have possessed 'marvellous physical insight'.
