TitleLetter from G [George] Johnstone Stoney, 8 Upper Hornsey Rise, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorStoney; George Johnstone (1826-1911); Irish physicist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date8 November 1897
DescriptionHe thanks Larmor for the reply regarding his nephew which he has sent to his brother. Stoney has called his attention to what Larmor has said in confidence. In an extended postscript Stoney states that he finds it difficult to consider they are right from a physical standpoint in regarding any medium as textureless except the fundamental aether. It seems that luminiferous aether is not space, but it may be motion in space. Equations representing its activity are of the same kind as that of the attraction of an ellipsoid [?] of water in an eternal particle. In reality the water is a textured body. Stoney must think more on this topic. He understood Larmor to hold that the luminiferous aether may be absolutely untextured.
