DescriptionAs Larmor was unable to visit his exhibition [at the Royal Society's conversazione, 'Experiments exhibiting interference between portions of light from independent sources'], Stoney gives a summary of the arrangement, which includes a sodium flame, grating, and observing telescope. He sketches the field of view of the telescope. Stoney attempted to investigate the phenomenon of where the spectrum was formed, as Larmor has been doing, and Stoney succeeded in proving that there would be a maximimum brightness in the directions of the spectra of the several orders. The maximum seemed to be gradual, whereas exzperiment and the new method establish that each maximum is abrupt. He gives sketches of curves and additional details, asking if Larmor can get results by the old methods.
