TitleLetter from H W [Henry William] Watson, the Rectory, Berkeswell, Coventry, to [Joseph Larmor]
CreatorWatson; Henry William (1827-1903); British clergyman
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date13 October 1887
DescriptionHis attention has been drawn to his correspondent's article in the Philosophical Magazine on currents in sheets and solids. He asks if Larmor is satisfied with the approximation on page 10. Watson had developed something similar but was distrustful of it, illustrating his point with equations. The paper appears to have special merit in bringing out the physical principles more clearly than others, noting the work of [Horace] Lamb and [William Davidson] Niven. Watson asks if there is a proof of an assertion on page 7, believing that he can prove that any magnetic field may be replaced by a system of currents on any closed surface, giving additional details.
