TitleLetter from W C D [William Cecil Dampier] Whetham, Upwater Lodge, Cambridge, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorDampier [formerly Whetham]; Sir William Cecil Dampier (1867-1952); British scientist and agriculturalist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date27 March 1906
Description[Lord] Berkeley has sent Whetham an account of an attempt to apply an equation to concentrated solutions which is similar to that of [Johannes Diderik] Van der Waals. Whetham had previously advised him to complete his osmotic pressure work first, but Berkeley has been working on the theory again. In sending the paper he has asked if Larmor could review it, and offer advice on whether it is worth him working on such ideas: 'The poor man has struggled to write it out clearly'. Whetham describes how Berkeley has tried to apply the equation to solutions and he believes the next step may be to get another temperature to test. Berkeley is asking one or two questions about his mathematics. Whetham asks Larmor to return the paper with notes.
