TitleLetter from H A [Harold Albert] Wilson, Physics Building, McGill University, Montreal, to Sir Joseph [Larmor]
CreatorWilson; Harold Albert (1874-1964); British physicist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date16 December 1909
DescriptionHe encloses a revised version of his paper [not present] on the relative motion of the Earth and hopes he will think it fit to read at the Royal Society. The error which made him withdraw the original paper was not an error at all. He was misled by an account of [George Gabriel] Stokes's theory given in [Hendrik] Lorentz's theory of electrons and therefore he thinks he has a good excuse. He did not see that the rotation of the wave due to the motion of the aether would make it steer itself straight along. He discusses Stokes's theory that it is essential that the aether and Earth have no rekative motion at the earth's surface. There are so few facts on the question that many alternative theories are possible, but he has tried to eliminate any mistakes from his paper, amd he hopes that Larmor will give it consideration.
