| Description | He thanks Larmor for his prompt reply and has written to Mr. Butler to congratulate him on a safe return. Regarding [Henry] Cavendish, Thorpe could finish his share in just a few days, as the chemical memoirs and journey accounts are complete. He agrees it is unnecessary to trouble the Pitt Press now, as they are not flourishing. He notes Sylvanus Thompson's report on the Catalogue of Scientific Papers; copy is well ahead but Clays have stated they are unable to meet their commitment. They could not undertake any more unremunerative work. Larmor will know that [Herbert] McLeod has resigned as Director owing to illness, and he will never be able to undertake such mental labour again. His eldest daughter was engaged to Major Nott-Bower, who has been shot and is dangerously ill at Boulogne. |
