| Title | Letter from R S [Robert Simpson] Woodward, the Hotel Metropole and the Whitehall Rooms, London, to Sir Joseph Larmor, St John's College, Cambridge |
| Creator | Woodward; Robert Simpson (1849-1924); American civil engineer, physicist, and mathematician |
| Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
| Date | 26 July 1912 |
| Description | Woodward and his wife are sailing tomorrow, their only regret being that they were unable to make an additional visit to Cambridge, in part dur to an attack of gastritis. He wished to congratulate Larmor on the success of the Royal Society's celebrations, but not at the expense of delaying Larmor's letter to The Times, published that morning. Woodward thinks they need to do more in securing an effective combination of theory and application in the physical sciences. He was tempted to write to The Times or Saturday review on newspaper abuse of public men. When he returns to Washington, he may raid Cambridge University of men, thinking that Dr. [William Halse Rivers] Rivers may be the man to raise standards in anthropology, although Woodweard stresses that he may be voted down by his colleagues. |
