TitleLetter from T E [Thomas Edward] Thorpe, Whinfield, Salcombe, S Devon, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorThorpe; Sir Thomas Edward (1845-1925); British chemist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date1 April 1917
DescriptionHe gives thanks for Larmor's letter, and there are many points about the [Henry] Cavendish book that he would like to talk over. It makes an interesting compilation and all the Philosophical Transactions papers have been copied and are ready for press. Thorpe has gone through the chemical and physical papers among the manuscripts, extracting and annotating everything of importance. He describes the difficulties, but thinks he has found everything of note; surprisingly few of Cavendish's researches came to nothing. He has still to hear from [Charles] Chree and [Frank] Dyson on the material submitted to them. Chree's are in good order, but the astronomical papers are in more of a tangle. He has heard from Mr. Peace of Cambridge University Press, who wants a copy sent to him when ready, to plan for composing and printing. At present they are moving carefully with new work as the staff are much reduced. Thorpe proposes to take a copy with him to confer with Peace. He regrets that Larmor cannot come to see him, and notes the torpedoed hospital ship 'Asturias' sitting on rocks before his window.
