| Description | He thanks Larmor for his letter and its enclosures. He is glad that the fragment proved interesting, but queries whether Larmor is right in reading into it [Henry] Cavendish's views on the nature of heat. Cavendish differed from [Joseph] Black on this, Cavendish disclaiming the use of Black's terminology. He quotes from Cavendish on the subject, and notes that he also refused to adopt [James] Watt's 'elementary heat' phrase. He thinks Larmor may modify his opinion, but he would be glad to print Larmor's comment, although it runs counter to Cavendish's explicit statements. He would like to show Larmor two other disconnected fragments. |
