TitleLetter from T E [Thomas Edward] Thorpe, Whinfield, Salcombe, S Devon, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorThorpe; Sir Thomas Edward (1845-1925); British chemist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date19-20 June 1918
DescriptionHe was glad to hear from Larmor about the [Henry] Cavendish project, which has slipped from his recollection as he worked on editing monographs of industrial chemistry. He is willing to agree to any modifications or rearrangements suggested by Larmor or the Syndics, approving of bringing the chemical volume into conformity with the electrical researches. He has not reproduced all details from the notebooks as [James Clerk] Maxwell had, since there is little to be gained. He does not object to transferring the magnetic part by [Charles] Chree into the Maxwell volume. He gives an assessment of Chree's contribution, [Frank] Dyson's and [Archibald] Geikie's. He hopes the Press will begin work on the Cavendish book soon, giving reasons including his own mortality. He is less concerned with the papers from the Royal Society as these have been carefully typed up by Miss Narracott. He also wishes to return the manuscripts to Chatsworth since they have been in his possession for several years and he wants to be relieved of the responsibility, and to pay due concern for the reputation of Cavendish, whose family were long associated with Cambridge University. If the Syndics would be willing to reprint Maxwell's volume, with additional physical papers, and a second volume on the chemistry and related material, then he would be able to draw up a plan with Larmor for the work. He hopes to have the pleasure of seeing Larmor before too long and he notes the travelling arrangements to Devon.
