TitleLetter from T E [Thomas Edward] Thorpe, Whinfield, Salcombe, S Devon, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorThorpe; Sir Thomas Edward (1845-1925); British chemist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date25 December 1918
DescriptionHe congratulates Larmor on the result of the election. Thorpe has yet to learn 'the true inward mess' of [William Cecil Dampier] Whetham's attack on suffrages. He notes a letter he has received from a disappointed woman voter. Thorpe thinks that the question will become increasingly acute as public sentiment has changed with the war. The suffrage question was settled with ease in Parliament, consenting to the election of women representatives, and there is increasing readiness to admit women to professions and learned societies. Universities cannot ignore this, and although women cannot be admitted to Colleges, but the university can at least admit them on the same terms as men to its degrees and Thorpe cannot see any reason why they should not do so. The matter will be certainly raised in Parliament before long. Thorpe received an interesting letter from [Svante] Arrhenius giving an account of the situation in Sweden arising from the war. They seem to have been hopelessly divided on national policy. Thorpe has heard nothing more about the Cavendish volume from Cambridge University Press.
