| Title | Letter from T E [Thomas Edward] Thorpe, Whinfield, Salcombe, S Devon, to [Joseph] Larmor |
| Creator | Thorpe; Sir Thomas Edward (1845-1925); British chemist |
| Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
| Date | 14 July 1920 |
| Description | He is now relieved that the title page and other material is complete for the Cavendish book. He expresses his gratitude to Larmor, especially for the preface, where Larmor struck the right note in his opening paragraph and the rest followed easily. Thorpe has adopted all of Larmor's proposed amendments, instructing them to be set up from Larmor's proof. He has left one point of query, on the title concerning aqueous tension. Thorpe had originally placed a footnote there, but had struck it out; he assumes that 'Cavendish wrote it late at night...or after a Royal Society Club dinner when the black-puddings disagreed with him'. The query suggested by Cavendish was done by later scientists and Cavendish seems not to have done any direct experiments in this area. |
