TitleLetter from T E [Thomas Edward] Thorpe, Government Laboratory, London, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorThorpe; Sir Thomas Edward (1845-1925); British chemist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date26 February 1907
DescriptionHe has been working steadily on the fractionalisation of the 413 grams of material entrusted to him by the Royal Society and he has concentrated all radium chloride into 5 grams of salt. The next step, crystallisation of of the salt from hydrochloric acid of gradually increasing strength is tedious, but will be done in about a week. He has all apparatus required for the determination of atomic weight and this will be done rapidly because of the limited amount of material. The final values will be available by the end of April. There have been no accidents and he should return all material tot he Royal Society: 412 grams of valueless barium chloride and a decigram of radium salt. He should present results ot the Society by May. Thorpe will undetake the obituary notice of [Dmitri] Mendeleev. He concludes by stating that the chemistry candidates are 'a strong lot'.
