TitleLetter from T E [Thomas Edward] Thorpe, 61 Ladbroke Grove, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorThorpe; Sir Thomas Edward (1845-1925); British chemist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date24 February 1908
DescriptionHe has completed his work on the atomic weight of radium and his results confirm those of Madame [Marie] Curie. He cannot pretend they are more accurate than her last published determinations, because of the small quantity of material he had to work with. However they show that Madame Curie's number is probably accurate to within 0.5 percent. Thorpe gives his values from French and Cambridge material in whole numbers as the experimental erors are too great to make decimals of any value. They do vary with other circumstances. He asks for fifteen minutes to communicate the results to the Royal Society in about a fortnight's time. He wishes to keep the radium chloride a little longer to settle one or two points. He is making observations of the violet colour of lime-soda glass made from pure materials, free from manganese.
