TitleLetter from H H [Herbert Hall] Turner, University Observatory, Oxford, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorTurner; Herbert Hall (1861-1930); British astronomer and seismologist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date22 February 1909
DescriptionTurner considers himself not exactly a conservative, but would drop any reform that would not go through without trouble. He gathers from Larmor speaking about 'technical astronomy' that he may have hit a nerve. Turner refers to [Simon] Newcomb's 'striking' paper, and states that he has set a computer to work out a periodogram. A remote possibility is that the two main periods estimated by Newcomb might be connected with the fluctuations of sunspot maximum, but Turner thinks the figures will be too different. He draws Larmor's attention to research by [Gavriil Adrianovich] Tikhov, which suggests that they can separate scattering effect by its different behaviour for different wavelengths; and that stellar distances might be measured by a method independent of parallax or parallactic motion.
