TitleLetter from J [Joseph] Larmor, St John's College, Cambridge, to [George Francis] Fitzgerald
CreatorLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
RecipientFitzgerald; George Francis (1851-1901); Irish physicist
Date29 June 1894
DescriptionLarmor has been trying to see into the difficulty of free magnetism and there seems no way out of it; making magnets consist of cyclic motions will not work. Larmor would like to make electric nuclei to be the sole ultimate things. He expands upon his thinking, saying that a positive and a negative nucleus whirling around each other set up a fluid motion which is perfect and is the magnetic vortex. 'This gives the elasticity of the aether a grip on the vortex motion, and so evades the trouble, as the flow is no longer purely cyclic'. He sees nothing incongruous in this, citing the example of discharge in vacuum tubes. He has sent his manuscript to the press and would like to be fortified by Fitzgerald's opinion.
