| Title | Letter from J [Joseph] Larmor, St John's College, Cambridge, to [George Francis] Fitzgerald |
| Creator | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
| Recipient | Fitzgerald; George Francis (1851-1901); Irish physicist |
| Date | 5 February [March?] 1894 |
| Description | Commencing: 'If your card (3.3.94) means that a vortex ring in an electric field - or one having an atomic charge - will move according to new laws, I quite agree'. Larmor suggested the problem to one of the Smith's Prize candidates for a dissertation and the author found that the vortex can be stationary or can move backwards. A vortex wiothout leectric charge will excite no rotation in the surrounding medium, unless subject to sudden disturbance, such as chemical action. |
