TitleLetter from E [Ernest] Rutherford, Physical Laboratories, The University, Manchester, to [Joseph John] Thomson
CreatorRutherford; Ernest; Baron Rutherford of Nelson (1871-1937); New Zealand physicist
RecipientThomson; Sir Joseph John (1856-1940); British physicist
Date22 July 1908
DescriptionHe has received Thomson's and [Joseph] Larmor's letters and showed them to [Horace] Lamb, who has sent a reply. Rutherford has only met 'P' [William Jackson Pope] casually, and therefore his judgement is superficial, but he is in agreement with Lamb's sentiments. He has consulted a friend with experience in the Faculty of Technology and relays his opinions: Pope had 'a devil of a time' with [John Henry] Reynolds, and had to 'wage war' with him, with the support of colleagues. This has embittered him and he is anxious to go somewhere more congenial. He does not quarrel with colleagues and 'takes a gentlemanly view of things'. Rutherford has personally found Pope to be pleasant enough; he appears dour at first, but this wears off. Rutherford has not heard him lecture but does not think he would be lively. Lamb thinks that Perkin knows him best.
