TitleLetter from J [Joseph] Larmor, St John's College, Cambridge, to [George Francis] Fitzgerald
CreatorLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
RecipientFitzgerald; George Francis (1851-1901); Irish physicist
Date3 February 1894 [? March added]
DescriptionHe sends by post the various manuscripts he wishes to condense and incorporate. They are chiefly explanatory and repetitive and he is too tired to put them right. His vortex atoms are no better than others, but he cannot do without them. He thinks that a molecule is a complex aggregation of primordial atoms, and this is Graham's view he finds. The natural velocity of an atom has little to do with phenomena. He notes the problem he gave to A.E.H. [Augustus Edward Hough] Love on the motion of two vortices on the same axis. He gives a diagram of the fluid motion with a dotted region where 'you might put your quadruple vortex inside'. [Hermann] Ebert has written a long paper in the current Annalen, on aether equations, with references to Fitzgerald's model.
