TitleDraft letter from [Joseph Larmor], St John's College, Cambridge, to 'My dear President' [William Huggins]
CreatorLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
RecipientHuggins; Sir William (1824-1910); British astronomer
Date24 October 1905
DescriptionIn view of his recurring trouble as Secretary and the conflict he is concerned with, he cannot face another Presidency without the matter being 'thrashed out'. He proposes to raise several questions at Council for definite decisions, when the matter of statutes comes up. He gives the example of whether it is irregular for a Fellow to send a paper to him at Cambridge for communication to the Society. He is willing to adopt a course of non-intervention if Council approve it, but he thinks the present procedure cannot continue. He states that the usual course is a disclaimer of responsibility by the Assistant Secretary if Larmor is asked to be kept informed of the state of editing the Proceedings, for example, followed by a complaint that he is disrupting the work of the Assistant Secretary.
