TitleLetter from Arch [Archibald] Geikie, the Royal Society, Burlington House, London, to 'My dear President' [William Huggins]
CreatorGeikie; Sir Archibald (1835-1924); British geologist and historian
RecipientHuggins; Sir William (1824-1910); British astronomer
Date30 October 1905
DescriptionHe has met with the Treasurer [Alfred Bray Kempe] to consult about [Joseph] Larmor's letter. They believe that the President should write to Larmor, saying that if he persists in making the matter one for Council, he will likely injure his own position and may do harm by suggesting to Council that there is friction between the Officers. The Society's regulations give ample scope for the Officers to regulate the Society's office work, including that of the Assistant Secretary. If Larmor goes to Council, the other Officers must state that there is no justification in his complaint that [Robert] Harrison's arrangements pose difficulties for the Secretaries. If the Society's business is to be conducted well, neither of the Secretaries should give direct orders to staff without considering any proposed rearrangements with the Assistant Secretary, and this should not interfere with ordinary discourse with the staff. Larmor should yield to his colleagues' wishes and they will help to meet his.
