Title | Letter from H L [Hugh Longbourne] Callendar, 49 Grange Road, Ealing, London, to Joseph [Larmor] |
Creator | Callendar; Hugh Longbourne (1863-1930); British physicist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir; Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 8 November 1911 |
Description | Callendar seeks advice on a paper he has written and hopes to publish soon, which describes 'a new and very accurate method of testing the variation of the specific heat of water'. The results of this work confirm his observations and those of [Howard Turner] Barnes, but criticise the results of [William Robert] Bousfield, [Richard Tetley] Glazebrook, and [Frank Edward] Smith. Callendar is concerned about potential controversy from this, but is unsure how to write such a paper without explaining their errors. He writes that if Larmor thinks it necessary, he will remove this criticism, but feels that this will weaken his findings. He ends by informing Larmor that Imperial College has not had a representative since 1806, and hopes Larmor will bear this in mind on the next occasion, also mentioning [William Whitehead] Watts and [John Bretland] Farmer.
