Title | Letter from G [George] Chrystal, 5 Belgrave Crescent, Edinburgh, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Chrystal; George (1851-1911); British mathematician |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir; Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 28 March 1909 |
Description | Chrystal shares that the 'opinion is pretty strong on the Council regarding the non-representation of the R.S.E [Royal Society of Edinburgh]', noting that many of his peers in Scotland would disagree with [Arthur] Schuster's view, expressed to the Royal Institution, that the Royal Society of London is "truly representative of the Empire". However, Chrystal hopes that this will not cause any disagreements between him and Larmor, and notes that he places great importance on the solidarity of scientific institutions. He argues that the Royal Society should be 'content with its de facto supremacy as the oldest and most powerful of the scientific societies', which 'no one will dispute so long as it is not abused or offensively employed'. He states that he wishes to avoid friction and will not forget the 'great service rendered' by the Society, which showed the 'advantange of scientific solidarity'. Chrystal then discusses Larmor's mathematical research. |
