| Title | Letter from Arch [Archibald] Geikie, Haslemere, to [Joseph] Larmor |
| Creator | Geikie; Sir Archibald (1835-1924); British geologist and historian |
| Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
| Date | 27 November 1909 |
| Description | He has read the various printed versions of the Kew Committee report, and gives his verdict on the changes and omissions made since the last meeting. He left this meeting before the end but thought that the general opinion was that the Gassiot Committee should act as an advisory board to the Meteorological Office in areas of their interests. [William Napier] Shaw did not wish this, but had no valid argument against it. As amended, the Royal Society is 'quietly ejected' from any supervision of the work, but would continue to provide funds. Geikie would propose to Council that the paragraphs on the Gassiot Committee should be restored. He gives a form of words which he judges would resolve these issues, and notes the powers of nomination and appointment of staff, which would give problems from a troublesome Director. |
