TitleLetter from Geo Fras [George Francis] Fitzgerald, Trinity College, Dublin, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorFitzGerald; George Francis (1851-1901); Irish theoretical physicist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date1 March 1894
DescriptionFitzgerald forgot to ask Larmor what he said in answer to Lord Kelvin and his attracting vortex rings. Vortex filaments move at 90 degrees to the direction of force acting upon them because they move so that energy is constant. Fitzgerald had forgotten that currents move so that the energy of the medium increases if the current is kept constant. The essence of the subject is the difference between the force on the current and that on the matter carrying it and he would like Larmor's views. He can see how Larmor can get out of it in case of ordinary conduction circuits by making them enclosed so that spin can be increased. He notes what corresponding theory would be required for amperian currents, but he is too busy to work it out for himself.
