Title | Letter from Margaret Lindsay Huggins, 90 Upper Tulse Hill, S W [South West], to Sir Joseph [Larmor] |
Creator | Huggins; Margaret Lindsay (1848 - 1915); Née; Murray; wife of William Huggins FRS; Irish-English astronomer; spectroscopist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 1 April 1910 |
Description | Huggins was grieved to hear that Professor Purser passed away, and that Larmor has lost an old friend, speaking highly of Purser's character. She then states that she, along with Sir William [Huggins], feels that Larmor should go Mount Wilson, and that he will find the trip to be inspiring and beneficial. She then discusses the 'D&F tragedy' [the affair between Marion Boys and Andrew Russell Forsyth]. She feels that 'it is very wrong indeed of Society to condone, as it has for so long, the doings of Mrs B and Mr F. It should have shown that these two were wrong at once'. She then discusses [Percival] Lowell's photographs, noting 'it is extraordinary the interest people who care nothing about Astronomy take in Mars, - especially in Mars according to Lowell!' and expects that there will be a big audience at the Royal Institution that Friday. |
