Title | Letter from William Huggins, 90 Upper Tulse Hill, S W [South West] London, to the Secretary [Joseph Larmor] |
Creator | Huggins; Sir William (1824-1910); British astronomer |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 23 April 1908 |
Description | Commencing with 'I failed to see any notice of the high doings at the Athenaeum so will you permit me now, late as it is, to offer our united congratulations on the tardy honour you the received. I have been reading and rereading your grand lecture, which is crowded wth points of great interest, and with profound suggestions'. Huggins was also grateful to see the reference to the 'subtle complexities suggested by the hereditary transmission of qualities. For the past fifty years I have felt utterly overwhelmed before the [?] biodynamical platitudes'. He then asks if Larmor has read [Svente August] Arrhenius's book 'Worlds in the Making' with its 'many startling statements', which Huggins then lists, before discussing the works of [Karl] Schwarzchild at Gottingen and [Jacob Robert] Emden. |
