TitleLetter from Horace Lamb, 6 Wilbraham Road, Fellowfield, Manchester, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorLamb; Sir Horace (1849-1934); British mathematician
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date19 June 1912
DescriptionHe writes about the selection of the next Secretary of the Royal Society on the mathematics and physical side. It is discussed outside and inside Council and some are anxious that the office should maintain the same standard of distinction, despite the field being limited by occupation and location. [Arthur] Schuster's name has come up often, as excellently qualified, but the thought has been that he would not limit his scientific and other activities. However, in conversation, Lamb was surprised to find that he would be willing to consider the role, if he felt that there was general support from the Fellowship. His delight in long expeditions is becoming satisfied, but he would not engage for more than five years. Lamb thinks the idea is attractive, even though it would be a loss for Manchester.
