TitleLetter from O J [Oliver Joseph] Lodge, 2 Grove Park, Liverpool, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorLodge; Sir Oliver Joseph (1851-1940); British physicist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date3 November 1893
DescriptionHe has had a good and satisfactory trial, having the equivalent of 50 feet of air magnetised to 1400 cgs. He could have seen 1/50th of a band shift, or certainly 1/20th. He gives a value for the upper limit of permissable aether velocity along the lines of force. 'In fact, not a millimeter a second'. If the light had been turned [?] on 2 millimeters per second for each CGS unit reverse in the coils, he would have seen it. He notes the amount of electricity used, and the arrangement of the beams of light.
