| Title | Letter from O J L [Oliver Joseph Lodge], 2 Grove Park, Liverpool, to [Joseph] Larmor |
| Creator | Lodge; Sir Oliver Joseph (1851-1940); British physicist |
| Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
| Date | 11 December 1893 |
| Description | His questions do not mean that he wants to plague Larmor to work, but rather a feature of Lodge's intense interest. Larmor's theory commends itself more and more. Lodge has little time to think yet, as term continues. He has not looked at Larmor's British Association paper. He hopes that Larmor will be able to bring his scheme to perfection, 'capital work for the century to die with'. He gives an account of his CS2 experiments, with comments. He gives his thoughts on magnetic flow in vacuo, matter being necessary for the plus to exceed the minus. This is undynamical work, but Lodge finds it difficult to associate momentum with the magnetic flow. He got no result with water of CS2. He thanks Larmor for remarks on metallic reflexion. He could not see the point of Kelvin's apparent objection to plus and minus poles repelling. He wrote to Keir and encloses his reply, asking for its return. It is easy to make big and temporary atoms of matter on Larmor's view, just as Hertz made big and temporary light waves. |
