Title | Letter from O J L [Oliver Joseph Lodge], 2 Grove Park, Liverpool, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Lodge; Sir Oliver Joseph (1851-1940); British physicist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 29 December 1896 |
Description | He gives Christmas wishes to Larmor and thanks him for alerting him to the Zeeman experiment. If he knew it resulted from Larmor's theory he would have looked at it months ago. He wonders if [Pieter] Zeeman used a unified field, and thinks he employed a long tube. Lodge will try to verify the experiment when the holidays are over. He has often debated having a still more powerful try at magnetic flow, thinking 'there must be some way out of it which prevents it affecting v [velocity] of light'. He thinks that only aether motion or matter motion can effect velocity of light, explaining his difficulty with aether motion. |
