TitleLetter from O J L [Oliver Joseph Lodge], 2 Grove Park, Liverpool, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorLodge; Sir Oliver Joseph (1851-1940); British physicist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date6 February 1897
DescriptionHe wonders if he told Larmor that he verified [Pieter] Zeeman's experiment, seeing the broadening of a sodium line from a flame between magnetic poles. The effect was small. He wrote to Rucker about communicating a paper to the Royal Society instead of the Philosophical Magazine, but he replied that prior publication was an objection. He suggested sending a note to be read next Thursday; Lodge thinks he will and Larmor should too and there might be a brief notice in Proceedings. He thinks that the aether will not be carried on so much as the observer in an 'Earth experiment', and considers the effects of a stationary or moving aether. He discusses the matter in further detail against Larmor's arguments, concluding that he wants to think it out. Lodge will write again, about Larmor's future papers, but the main thing 'is this Zeeman business'. He is writing his note now, and wants one from Larmor.
