Title | Letter from O J L [Oliver Joseph Lodge], 225 Hagley Road, Birmingham, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Lodge; Sir Oliver Joseph (1851-1940); British physicist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 11 September 1901 |
Description | He thanks Larmor for a letter explaining the Glasgow programme. Lodge was amazed to find that Larmor admired Marconi's lecture at the Society of Arts, thinking he must be joking. The syntonic plan which Lodge has been working on for more than a year is based upon experiments in his Royal Society Proceedings paper, which he recaps. The sending apparatus is much the same, but he does not find it easy to send over large distances. Marconi's last patent hit on the same plan, but with the addition of transformers. He does not know what evidence there is for it to work over large distances and notes difficulties in tuning. He would be interested to know what it was that Larmor admired in Marconi's procedure, warning him against exerting undue influence on the stock market, something which has always annoyed Kelvin, when his statements have been used by financiers. He encloses a rough sketch of his equipment plan [present]. |
